Claudia Wieser

Berlin-based artist Claudia Wieser (b. 1973, Freilassing, Germany) is known for her Modernist-inspired geometric constructions. Influenced by the work of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, who embraced spirituality as part of their aesthetic process, Wieser broadens their ideals to consider the coexistence of abstraction and physiological experience. The artist‘s hand is readily evident in a multimedia process that is both meticulous and delicate, as seen in her fine colored pencil and gold leaf drawings. Through an early apprenticeship as a blacksmith at Bergmeister Kunstshmiede, Wieser honed her understanding of art and the object, the aesthetic and the functional. This studied craft informs her approach to the technical drafting of her multi-faceted mirrors, hand-painted and patterned ceramics, and carved wooden sculpture.

Weiser‘s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at The Drawing Center, New York, NY; the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, MO; and Smart Museum, Chicago, IL. Her work has been included in recent group exhibitions at Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany; Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, South Korea; Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, LA; Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany; and Marta Herford Museum for Art, Architecture, Design, Herford, Germany. Wieser’s work is collected by prominent institutions, including the Sammlung Goetz, Munich; Contemporary Art Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany; Deutsche Bundesbank Kunstsammlung, Frankfurt; Helaba Art Collection, Germany; DekaBank Art Collection, Germany; and Zabludowicz Collection, London. In July 2021, Wieser unveiled her first outdoor public installation at the Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York commissioned by Public Art Fund. In 2023, she presented work in collaboration with historic Yves Saint Laurent couture, designing a set within the Museé Yves Saint Laurent, Paris. Wieser earned an MA in Painting and Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and she is represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York and Aspen; Jessica Silverman, San Francisco; Sies + Höke, Düsseldorf; von Bartha, Basel.
