The HOUDINI chair, designed by Diez for e15 in 2009, uses 4mm oak-veneered plywood shells glued over solid wood frames without nails or screws, inspired by airplane models. Named for Houdini’s “magic” seamless build, it offers a curved back, generous seat, and options as side chair or armchair in lacquered finishes. Blending craft and industry, it’s a light, timeless piece for home or contract settings.

Stefan Diez, a German industrial designer born in 1971 in Freising to fourth-generation carpenters, trained as a cabinetmaker before studying under Richard Sapper at Stuttgart’s State Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 2002. He worked with Konstantin Grcic, founded Munich’s DIEZ OFFICE in 2003, and has taught at universities like Karlsruhe, Lund, and as head at Vienna’s University of Applied Arts since 2018. His work focuses on craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation.
In his search for an ergonomic seating shell without involving costly tooling material, Stefan Diez was inspired to apply techniques used for the construction of wooden gliders and airplanes. The result is an original silhouette made with modern construction methods and highlighted with bold colour that has since made HOUDINI a design classic, and an identifiable icon for e15.
Since 1995, e15 develops original products and supports artistic statements, which reflect the brand’s philosophy and open approach to diverse cultures and disciplines. e15 is defined by the unique backgrounds of architect and founder Philipp Mainzer together with designer and art director Farah Ebrahimi. In addition to reissued design classics by protagonists of Modernism, the collection evolves from close cooperation with a coterie of designers, architects, and artists.
